Mochana Deaddiction
Centre is a living testimony to the power of compassion, faith, and a
relentless commitment to transforming lives. Its origins trace back to the
visionary leadership of the Late Lamented
Rt. Rev. Dr. Zacharias Mar Theophilus Suffragan Metropolitan, whose deep
empathy and social consciousness laid the foundation for this healing mission.
A Seed of Change: The
Vision Begins
In the late 1980s, a
young woman’s tearful plea to Thirumeni about her father's alcoholism and its
devastating effect on her family moved him deeply. Her story was not just
personal—it echoed the silent suffering of countless families across Kerala.
Thirumeni recognized that addiction was not just an individual affliction but a
social crisis that demanded urgent, compassionate intervention.
Asha Niketan: The First
Step Towards Empowerment
In response to the
broader struggles of the marginalized, Asha Niketan was established under his guidance—a socio-economic initiative offering
employment to women through small-scale industries such as umbrella-making,
candle-making, and book-binding.
Soon, Thirumeni
expanded its mission to include alcoholism
relief, marking the beginning of what would become a fully-fledged
deaddiction initiative. Pioneers like Rev.
N. V. Korula, Mr. O. C. Kurian, and
Rev. E. J. Joseph—who brought
professional training from the U.S.—played vital roles in shaping this new path
of healing and recovery.
The Birth of Mochana: A
Beacon of Hope
On September 2, 1993, the Mochana Addiction Rehabilitation and Counseling
Centre was officially inaugurated in the Asha Niketan building with just
four patients. From these humble beginnings, Mochana evolved into a leading
deaddiction center under the Kottayam-Kochi
Diocese of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church.
Mochana pioneered a holistic model of care, integrating
medical treatment, psychiatric support, counseling, vocational training, and
spiritual nurturing. Unlike commercial centers, Mochana has always remained a non-profit charitable mission, powered
by donations, volunteerism, and minimal beneficiary contributions.
Our Impact: Transforming
Lives, Restoring Hope
Over the past three
decades, Mochana has served thousands of
individuals, with more than 70%
coming from impoverished and marginalized backgrounds. Many arrive at our doors
broken—homeless, rejected, and hopeless. But through our care, they are
empowered to reclaim their lives, reunite with their families, and reintegrate
into society with dignity and purpose.
